North Cyprus has a colourful history and the remains of cultures that have passed through left their mark in the way of architecture, and many of those buildings still stand. The main influence in Cyprus comes from the near nations Greece and Turkey, but over the years other countries have had involvements.
The district of Kyrenia in north Cyprus has many indications of foreign cultures, places like the Bellapais Abby which was built by French monks in the 12th century. In the surrounding pavilions there is an ancient Greek orthodox church. In the town of Kyrenia you will find a church dedicated to the Archangel Michael that was built during Roman occupation.
There have also been many invasions and seizures across the island, mainly in north Cyprus. The Kantara, Buffavento and St. Hilarion Castles are thought to been built by the Greek after a series of Arab raids. Richard I (Richard Lion Heart) captured the island of Cyprus in 1191 whilst constructing an empire.
The culture influence doesn’t stop will construction though, you will find the foods in north Cyprus have been influenced also with many dishes consisting of a mix from traditional Turkish and Greek recipes and ingredients as well as their own.
